Nine major animal protection organisations have called on the Prime
Minister to ban the use of wild animals in circuses. DEFRA recently
announced that it cannot introduce a ban because of a lawsuit taking
place in Austria.
There is no such lawsuit and DEFRA was forced to admit to a 'mistake'
yet maintained its stance in a parliamentary debate this week.
The government is preparing to introduce a licencing scheme to
'regulate' the exploitation of wild animals in circuses following recent
undercover investigations and overwhelming public support for a decisive
ban.
The Captive Animals Protection Society and others are now working
towards a full parliamentary debate and vote, and there is much support
among MPs for this to take place.
