Slaughter of birds

Sir, - As a supporter of the Royal Society for the protection of Birds, I am apalled at the needless slaughter of migrant birds in Catholic countries such as Italy, Spain and Malta.

Some 150 million birds die by shooting and many millions are trapped by netting and liming.

It is a tragedy that many species are in danger of extinction. Of the 400 species living in European countries, some 200 species are decreasing every year.

"The animal world and all creation is a manifestation of God's power, his wisdom, and his goodness, and as such deserves man's respect and consideration." (Pope Pius XII)
