Animal Rites With the fair, fete and carnival season well under way, it appears to
be 'fashionable' to emblazon posters with 'Ox Roast," "Pig Roast," etc.,
and Church functions appear to be no exception. The sight of an impaled, charred corpse of an animal is redolent of
pagan ritual sacrifice, and to my mind constitutes a blasphemy at events
designed to raise funds for the house of God. In Old Testament days animals were offered as burnt sacrifices to
God. Have we travelled so little distance in intelligence and compassion
in 2,000 years to offer up similar sacrifices to our stomachs? This does not seem consistent with the ideals of Churches preaching
the love of God for all His creation. (Mrs) B.E. Hardwick Catholic Herald |
