Church's silence

Sir, - I was delighted to read of the Bishop of Salisbury's speaking out against the Church's silence over animal welfare.

The Archbishop of York elect, Dr. John Habgood, in his book A Working Faith, mentions the use of animals in scientific experiments, of the enormous amount of experiments which cannot be classed as medical research.

He asks, what sort of civilisation are we, which finds it necessary to kill millions of our fellow creatures by feeding them on face creams, floor polishes, bubble bath liquids, lavatory cleansers, and anti-freeze additives?

Surely it is time for the Church to speak out, and to speak out loudly against this sort of thing?
