Sir, The excruciating complacency of Bishop Bickersteth's letter (September 21) need not surprise us. The Church has never come near to following the teaching of Jesus and St. Francis of Assisi. It has never come near to the compassion of Buddha, who said, "Life is dear to all. When a man considers this he does not kill or cause to kill." If the bishops want their righteousness to exceed that of the Scribes and Pharisees, or seek to remedy the spiritual poverty of the greens, let them first to a man become vegetarians.
