From Dr. Andrew Perkis: The Archbishop of Canterbury's Secretary for Public Affairs - 14 Apr 1992

"The Archbishop certainly believes that animal welfare is a moral issue and that Christians need to reassess some traditional teaching about how we as human beings regard the rest of God's creation, including other animals. He would not himself conclude that killing animals for meat is contrary to the Gospel and the purposes of God, though he repects the position of those who do hold such beliefs."
