Sir, I was surprised at Alice Thomas Ellis's slur against vegetarians in her column of the 23rd of June. It shows little regard for those religious orders where vegetarianism is practised, or for those people whose respect for God's animal creation and extreme distaste for the cruelty involved in meat production today, deters them from having anything to do with it. Mavis Staunton Catholic Herald (7/7/00) NB Whilst many vegetarians would not have been amused by the article in question the tone was satirical and dealt with "The cheapest and most disagreeable guest who ever gloomed my hearth or entered my portals...and she was infinitely more difficult to deal with than the most fastidious gourmand I ever knew" - perhaps a lesson in public relations for vegetarians/vegans may exist therein!
