'Catholic Herald' Debate (1980)Letters

Heavenly view of animals

C. S. Lewis in "The Problem of Pain" (1940) put forward a proposition that seems to me to provide a solution to "animals in Heaven".

Whilst finding it impossible to imagine a Heaven over-run with all manner of animals, he could still not believe that the glory of God's creation would be complete without the "lionliness" of lions or the "lambliness" of lambs.

I would recommend the reading of the whole of his chapter on "Animal pain" especially to anyone who is missing a much loved pet. True respect for dogs (and all other animals) is to see them as dogs and not invest them with anthropomorphic qualities to flatter our own vanity.
