Letters - By J. M. Gilheany
Have the faith to respect other life

Re: 'Despite pleas, state outlaws slaying cows' (The Catholic Times, July 25), I thought that I may have stumbled over a typographical error, then sadly remembered that I was reading a Christian newspaper.

Such is the context of general disregard for pleas of mercy and lack of reverence for non-human life which often prevails throughout the churches. If Hope may be considered in relation to 'slaying' then let us be thankful, on this occasion, that the Hindu voice for compassion was considered more worthy than Christian-Muslim demands for the killing of gentle creatures.

After all, the Catholic Church has been striving to enhance inter-faith relations for decades. Therefore, it is necessary to respect the highest values of other cultures where traditional interests may appear to conflict and the prospect of a peaceable outcome exists.
