'Methodist Recorder' Debate
(1983) Letters

Bird-song

A swift answer to Mr Keith Crawford's question to supply the missing line in a ditty about hymn-singing birds. Here is the verse in full:

Two little birds in the
wood,
Sang hymns as loud as
they could.

They had many a doubt
What the words were about
But they felt it was doing
them good.

The verse is by Alec Findlay and was quoted by Dr. Sangster, Mrs Doris Higham tells us. She came across the verse again in connection with the deliberations over the new hymn book and printed it in her local church newsletter.
