God's Green World
(Christian Ecology
Group)
From The Vegetarian (May/June 1984)
This is an interesting little booklet containing a collection of
essays giving the thoughts of some Christians on various topical
issues such as Nuclear Weapons, Economics, Power and Authority. Two
chapters will be of particular concern for vegetarians; ‘Christians
and Animals’ by Barry Miles which sets out to show that it is wrong
for Christians to devalue animals and that the scriptures say we must
treat them with compassion. Roger Shorter’s chapter on ‘Vegetarianism’
touches on the question of ‘was Jesus a vegetarian?’ and though he
gives no final answer, he provides a considerable amount of evidence
from the bible that meat-eating has been over-emphasised by the
incorrect translation of various words for ‘food’.
Definitely
worth buying if you are interested in this topic, or if you need to
counter the oft-met criticism that “it’s all right to eat meat because
the bible says animals were put on earth solely for the benefit of
man.”
