Another massive meat recall is upon us.

salmonella

Maine-based food company Barber Foods is recalling 1.7 million pounds of chicken, fearing it has been contaminated with the deadly salmonella bacteria.

The recall was prompted when patients in Wisconsin and Minnesota showed signs of salmonella poisoning. To make matters worse, this is the company’s second recall in less than a month.

Time reports, “This new recall is an extension of a recall from July 2 of this year, where the company recalled 58,320 pounds of the frozen Chicken Kiev.”

Salmonella results in more hospitalizations and deaths than any other foodborne illness, sickening more than a million people a year. In fact, the salmonella infection rate has risen 44 percent in just the last decade.

As undercover investigations by Mercy For Animals have shown time and again, factory farms are not only breeding grounds for unconscionable animal cruelty, but also for deadly diseases.

The best way to safeguard your own health and reduce the needless suffering of animals is to transition to a humane vegan diet. For more information, including tips on making the transition, check out ChooseVeg.com.
