A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Left – Right - 20 Feb 2006
By Mary T. Hoffman

Have you noticed how political language has become? It seems as though almost any utterance invites criticism; some group or individual is sure to be offended. I wonder if some writers and speakers feel like they’re wearing mental strait jackets!

It’s getting so ridiculous, it’s almost as though you can’t even give directions without making a political statement! If someone asks directions and you say “Go left at the next traffic light” (better not to say “red” or “green” light!) or “Go right at the next stop sign” you might offend. Right? Oops! Didn’t mean that!

And what about marching? Is it correct to say, “left, right” or “right, left”?

Several years ago, someone told me that they had been criticized for putting the word “animals” before the word “people.” Some Christians also criticize putting a wife’s name before the husband’s. However, when I was a little girl, I heard that it was “ladies” before “gentlemen.” On the other hand, I like being addressed as Mrs. Frank L. Hoffman.

How complicated we humans make things!

Disclaimer: The above title is not a political statement. Reader will kindly note that the words “left” and “right” are listed alphabetically.

Happy Presidents Day!
