Among Webster’s definitions of the word “idol” are the following:
“a representation or symbol of a deity used as an object of worship”
and “a false god”; and for the word “idolatry”: “the worship of a
physical object as a god”; “immoderate attachment or devotion to
something.”
In the last two Blogs I wrote about Y2K (year two thousand) and the
way many fearful Christians were manipulated into spending a lot of
money to protect themselves and their families from the doom they were
led to believe was imminent.
The way they ignored our Bible-based stance and our refusal to worry
and to hoard food, etc., and the way they blindly followed the
fear-mongers, makes me wonder if they are really worshiping God. Their
actions make it seem as though they place more confidence in the false
prophets they blindly follow.
If these professing Christians are putting their leaders before the
Word of God, aren’t they in effect engaging in idolatry – putting
someone or something in place of God?
The Prophet Jeremiah’s words of approximately 2600 years ago still
apply today (Jeremiah 5:21):
21 Hear now this, O foolish people, without understanding or heart,
who have eyes and see not, who have ears and hear not.
