A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Holidays – 12 May 2007
By Mary T. Hoffman

With tomorrow being Mother’s Day, I was thinking about the increasing, out-of-control commercialization surrounding holidays.

Two TV news personalities were talking about the money – in the billions – that will be spent on this year’s Mother’s Day. The one who thought that the most money would be spent on flowers as gifts was wrong. It turns out that taking Mother to a restaurant was number one on the list, while flowers were second.

Think about it: Celebrating motherhood by gorging on the tortured remains and secretions of other mothers and their children! Do you see the disconnect – the chasm – here?

When will humans stop ruining every holiday (“holy” day?!) with their insatiable lust for more and more products of cruelty? With “decadence” considered a desirable description that sells – well, what do you expect?!
