A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Variety Is the Spice of Life – 10 November 2007
By Mary T. Hoffman

I’m sure we’ve all heard the saying “Variety is the spice of life” countless number of times. Before Frank and I made the change to a vegan diet over twenty years ago, we didn’t realize how boring and limited our animal-product based food choices were. Switching to a healthful plant-based diet opened up possibilities we had never considered before – and we’re still learning and having fun on this wonderful journey that has blessed us with improved health and a quiet conscience.

Like so many other people in this society we had been brainwashed by the flesh and dairy industries that bombard the public with fears about “getting enough protein and calcium,” etc. Finally going vegan gave us a sense of freedom and joy that we appreciate to this day.

We began to explore and experiment with the huge bounty of fruits, vegetables, legumes, and grains that provide a wealth of nutrients. And we discovered spices new to us as we began to try ethnic recipes that were already vegan or could easily be adapted to our vegan lifestyle.

So – variety really is the spice of our vegan lives!
