The Best New Year’s Resolution – 1 January 2008
What is the one thing that’s easy, fun to do, and has far-reaching
benefits for people, personal health, non-human animals, and the
environment? Going Vegan! The blessings of a vegan lifestyle are
enormous. Eating unprocessed whole grains, vegetables, legumes, and
fruit improves health and saves money – and that’s only the beginning.
Everybody wins with a vegan lifestyle – humans, other animals, and
the environment. Look at all the grain – 70 percent in the U.S. – that
is fed to “food animals” bound for slaughter, while countless people
around the world haven’t enough to eat. The solution is right there in
the Bible for anyone to see: Then God said, “Behold I have given you
every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and
every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you.”
(Genesis 1:29)
Avoiding flesh and dairy helps reduce the production of methane, one
of the leading causes of global warming. According to a study by the
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, worldwide,
raising livestock generates more greenhouse gases than all forms of
transportation combined (18 percent vs. 13 percent). And then there’s
the water problem: besides the runoff pollution from animal agriculture,
one pound of animal protein takes 100 times as much water to produce as
one pound of plant protein, and eight times as much energy. So, going
vegan automatically protects the environment by eliminating the methane
gas produced by the cattle-exploiting industries, as well as by
conserving water and energy.
And last but not least, going vegan blesses you with the freedom and
joy that only a clear conscience can bring! Frank and I speak from
personal experience. It’s been over twenty years since we took the step
that proved to be one of the best things we’ve ever done – going vegan!
