Yesterday Frank and I had a wonderful time at the Mid-Hudson
Vegetarian Society’s (MHVS) annual celebration of the great American
Meat-Out, enjoying a large variety of delicious vegan food and
greeting old friends, as well as meeting new ones. Also in attendance
were President of MHVS Roberta Schiff and Rae Schlecht, Founder.
As guest speaker for the occasion, Holly Cheever, DVM captivated her
audience with her humor and down-to-earth personality as she spoke about
her husband and four children, as well as her commitment to helping
animals.
Dr. Cheever graduated from Harvard University in 1971 and Cornell’s
Veterinary College in 1980. Besides being in private practice, she
assists local law enforcement officials in animal cruelty
investigations, lobbies for improved animal protection laws as a board
member of the New York Humane Association, and is vice president of the
Association of Veterinarians for Animal Rights. She lectures to all ages
on environmental and animal welfare subjects. The children’s groups that
she invites to her farm for field trips get to visit with many animals –
many of them rescued from abuse cases. As “the GH Vet,” Dr. Cheever
wrote a regular column for the Good Housekeeping magazine for several
years.
