A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Tokenism – 31 March 2008
By Mary T. Hoffman

After hearing about the plan of some places to participate in Earth Day (April 22nd) by turning off electricity for an hour, the word “tokenism” came to mind. That’s what I call cheap symbolism.

If they were really, seriously interested in “saving the Earth” they would tell the truth about the fact that livestock production is the source of more greenhouse gases than all forms of transportation in the world combined; 90% of the food fed to livestock to produce milk and meat is wasted; 75% of the agricultural land in Europe and the U.S. is used to grow food for livestock; and animal product consumption is rapidly escalating in developing countries, with the Chinese now consuming more meat per person than do North Americans. This demand for animal products has led to the wholesale clearance of forests, soil erosion and floods.

This self destruction of the human race will not end until they face the truth, stop their tokenism (which is just a form of dishonesty), and acknowledge the root of the problem – their hardness of heart and lack of empathy with their fellow creatures on Earth.

It’s time to go back to the Bible and take seriously Genesis 1:29 – Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you.” In other words, go vegan!
