A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Free-range? – 9 April 2008
By Mary T. Hoffman

Many people like to fool themselves by buying into the “free-range” myth promoted by animal exploiters.

Here is a bit of truth about this much-touted deception that wishful-thinking consumers fall prey to:

Legally, the term free-range is virtually meaningless. The federal government has only the vague requirement that the animals, from which such meat is derived, have access to the outdoors. This could mean one small opening for thousands of birds. There is nothing in the law to prevent these “free-range” animals from receiving the same cruel treatment imposed on other factory-farmed animals. Moreover, Consumers Reports found free-range poultry actually more contaminated with salmonella and campylobacter than other poultry. – From: 101 Reasons Why I’m a Vegetarian by Pamela Rice

So in reality, duped consumers are simply paying more for abused, diseased poultry!

Going vegan is the answer: It’s good for humans as well as non-humans.
