A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Chicken Recall – 5 May 2008
By Mary T. Hoffman

The latest “food” recall announced in the news yesterday involves 143 tons of fresh and frozen meat and poultry products that might be contaminated with the bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, which can potentially cause Listeriosis resulting in high fever, headache, nausea and, in people with depressed immune systems, even death.

When will people learn that crossing the boundaries of other animals, by eating them and their secretions, is just plain wrong no matter how one may try to excuse it? There is nothing good about exploiting nonhumans for whatever reason: it’s bad for humans, bad for the exploited animals, and bad for the environment.

And since I brought up the environment, consider all the contaminated run-off from factory farms that ends up polluting the water. Then there’s all the land used to grow food for farmed animals when that land could be used to grow crops for the starving people of the world. I could go on and on about the harm brought about by animal agriculture. When will people admit that God’s original plan was the best: to eat a plant-based diet? In other words, go vegan!

Genesis 1: 29: Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you.”
