For this Independence Day, I’ve chosen a quotation attributed to
Abraham Lincoln and a poem by Carl Sandburg.
"The Union is much older than the Constitution. It was formed in
fact, by the Articles of Association in 1774. It was matured and
continued by the Declaration of Independence in 1776."
– Abraham Lincoln
The Little Girl Saw Her First Troop Parade
By Carl Sandburg
(6 January 1878 – 22 July 1967)
The little girl saw her first troop parade and asked,
“What are those?”
“Soldiers.”
“What are soldiers?”
“They are for war. They fight and each tries to kill as many of the
other side as he can.”
The girl held still and studied.
“Do you know…I know something?”
“Yes, what is it you know?”
“Sometime they’ll give a war and nobody will come.”

"Joyful Curmudgeon"
An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful. At the
same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the
world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true
peace and compassion.Blog
