A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Teaching Children Kindness – 21 July 2008
By Mary T. Hoffman

In 1933 the National PTA Congress stated, "Children trained to extend justice, kindness, and mercy to animals become more just, kind, and considerate in their relations with each other. Character training along these lines will result in men and women of broader sympathies, more humane, more law-abiding – in every respect more valuable citizens."

"Since animal abuse has also been found to be an indication of child abuse, it becomes even more imperative that these acts be investigated. In fact it has been found that animals are abused in 88% of the families where children are abused." Humane Education News, 1997

I can’t help but think of the disconnect presented in these comments. Are the same children who are taught to extend justice, kindness, and mercy to animals also taught to eat the flesh and bodily secretions of farmed animals? Shouldn’t the same concern shown companion animals extend to animals used for food, biomedical research, entertainment, etc.?

Simply going vegan would solve most of the problems that loom so large in the world today – human and other animal abuse, health, and the environment are all impacted by the stubborn adherence to animal-product consumption that should have been abandoned ages ago.
