“Smithfield Foods, the largest pork producer in the world,
slaughtered 27 million pigs in 2005. Pound for pound this number
represents, in equivalent human weight, the population of the 32
largest U.S. cities yet only 26 percent of all the pigs that are
slaughtered in the country as a whole. North Carolina’s pigs alone
emit the waste-equivalent of 40 million people, and essentially none
of it is treated.”

Reading this, I thought about all the horrific abuse and slaughter of
so many other farmed animals in addition to pigs, and the world-wide
increased demand for animal products. How much longer will humans be
able to succumb to this insanity without repercussions brought about by
their own evil gluttony and self-indulgence on this blood-soaked earth?
Is it any wonder that there is such a dramatic increase in obesity,
diabetes, and cancer? Add to that the air and water pollution, and
bacterial cross-contamination problems, and you have the formula for
humanity’s self-destruction.
Before closing, I want to add a comment about the absolutely
insensitive restaurant advertisement in this week’s freebie paper: “Pig
Roast Party,” and “Live music, live entertainment, volleyball, games,
use of pool.” The first thing that came to mind after seeing this ad was
the word “uncivilized.” Can you imagine having fun over the tortured
remains of one of God’s intelligent creatures?
