A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Like an Animal? – 1 December 2008
By Mary T. Hoffman

Have you noticed how often you’ll hear someone belittling or criticizing another person by calling him/her “an animal”? When I hear such a remark, I always think, “Well, that’s really a compliment!” After all, it’s the human animal that has been destroying the planet and its inhabitants, both human and nonhuman, isn’t it?

Look how billions of dollars are spent on wars. And with the wide array of vegetation available, look how most humans insist on consuming the body parts and secretions of the “lower animals.” These human carnivores, many of whom claim to believe in God, ignore their Creator’s original instruction found right there in their Bible (Genesis 1:29):

29 Then God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the surface of all the earth, and every tree which has fruit yielding seed; it shall be food for you.”

If the “lower animals” communicate with each other, I wouldn’t be surprised if they criticize others by saying that “he/she behaves almost as badly as one of those humans!”

We humans can choose to live closer to God’s original intent by going vegan. It’s good for us, for the other animals, and for the earth that we all share.
