On Saturday, my husband Frank and I attended the annual Great
American Meatout celebration at Rhinebeck, New York. We always look
forward to these gatherings that feature great vegan food and
excellent speakers.
The guest speaker was Jeff Novick, Registered Dietician, whose sense
of humor involves his audience and makes learning fun. His message and
power point presentation about the food industry, “Health Food vs.
Healthy Food. Knowing the Difference Can Save Your Life,” was serious;
but his personality made the facts presented easily accessible to his
listeners of a wide range of ages and backgrounds.
This year is the 25th annual observance of this grassroots diet
education campaign, and the theme is “Change Your Diet – Change the
World!” Every year in March, around the first day of spring, people in
all fifty U.S. states and two dozen other countries host a variety of
educational events and ask others to explore a wholesome, compassionate
diet of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
Here are some of the benefits of a vegan diet:
~ Reduced risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, diabetes, and
other top killers.
~ Reduced world hunger by increasing the availability of grains and
soybeans.
~ Reduced deforestation and pollution of water supplies by animal
waste.
~ Reduced global warming: animal agriculture is #1 producer of
greenhouse gases.
~ Reduced animal suffering in factory farms and slaughterhouses.
When confronted with the horrid facts about industrial animal
farming, many people ask what they can do to help end the suffering.
Well, there is a simple answer: Go Vegan!
