Summary:

  • When helping villagers get rid of their current habits such as fuel sources, Marr helps the village use other fuel sources, such as biogas. Marr also does this with all locally available building material, so there is no dependency on foreign aid.
  • Media is the key to all activism. Without media it would be impossible to get your message across to the masses. The more media you have the better chance your have in completing your goal.
  • Thousands of tigers have been lost due to poaching. Many others have been killed for sport. Tiger hunting was sport for royalty; some hunters have single-handedly (along with their enormous teams) killed over one thousand tigers each. In the case of Sita, killing one tigers is equal to killing three tigers (she and her two cubs).
  • Once having a population of 100,000, the tiger is now listed as one of the most endangered animals on the planet. Less than 5,000 remain in the wild. In the past 60 years, three of the eight original subspecies have been exterminated due to poaching and habitat loss.

Opinion:

Anthony Marr was a very interesting speaker. He was unlike anyone else we have had speak to us. At first it was not very clear what he stood for besides saving tigers or where he stood in politics, but soon I realized that he supported planet Earth.

Marr tries to do whatever possible to help save our planet. Marr promotes anti-whaling, anti-trophy-hunting, and earths biodiversity, just some of his main causes. \

When Marr said that he was anti-trophy-hunting ad that all sport hunting should be abolished, I did not agree with them. Bring a hunter I believe that many hunters get a bad name because the hunters that abuse nature and laws. Yes, some hunting is obscene but other times it can be useful.

For example, in Ohio, we currently have a problem with over population of deer. As the population of deer increases the resources of the deer decrease. To keep these resources we must make sure that the deer population stays at a steady number, so they do not further hurt the environment with disease or rapid depletion of resources. On Marrs website he talks about hunters being unethical and avoiding regulations and tactics, but does this mean that all hunters are unethical and they always try to avoid regulations? No, saying that no one should be allowed to hunt because of a select few do not abide by the rules is wrong. Just as saying that since a number of people have been in car accidents due to lack of following the rules of the road, people are not allowed to drive is wrong.

On the other hand, Marr had a lot of useful information. I had never realized that it takes 20 pounds of feed to produce one pound of beef, and the negative effects that raising the cattle has. These constant negative actions that we keep taking on animals habitats will eventually lead us to loss of the animals that live in those habitats.

Overall, I thought Marr was a very informational speaker. He was very persuasive due to vast detail that he knew about each subject touched upon. I hope that he continues to spread his knowledge throughout the world.
