Farming is Cruel
If Barend Poortenaar truly believes that "animal welfare should be paramount" (Local milk is best, 29/7) he should not be promoting dairy because this industry is one of the most ruthless on the planet.
Dairy farmers deliberately, and mercilessly, bring calves into the world for the sole purpose of killing them and stealing their milk. Each year in Australia 700,000 of these sweet babies are slaughtered in their first week of life.
Cows are devoted mothers and the continual theft of their calves causes them immense pain too.
Despite the fact that dairy cows give years of faithful service to the farmer they are treated equally callously.
When their milk supply diminishes they are sent to the same cruel and terrifyingly death as their calves.
As for meat being healthy, the British Medical Association states that vegetarians have lower rates of coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, large bowel disorders, cancers, strokes and gallstones. The facts speak for themselves.
