Letter to Mother Jones Concerning Ecover Ad
Note: We published this letter after we failed to get a reply for either Mother Jones of ECover.  On 29 Jan 2003 we got a reply from Michael Bremans of ECover.  Since receiving this letter we will only cease to buy their dishwashing liquid that contains whey, a product of the dairy industry.

To the Editor:

As new Mother Jones subscribers opening your magazine for the first time, we were puzzled by the double page Ecover ad that greeted us. The copy mentions that their products are "environmentally sustainable".

A few years ago, we stopped buying Ecover products when we realized that "whey", a by-product in the production of cheese, is used in some of their products. Animal agriculture is by far the greatest destroyer of the environment, and the use of this agricultural by-product helps reduce the cost of dairy products, keeping prices of agricultural products down, thus encouraging more animal agriculture: a vicious cycle.

Until Ecover changes this policy by becoming truly "sustainable", we will continue to avoid their products and advise others to do the same.

Sincerely,
The Mary T. and Frank L. Hoffman Family Foundation
