Wild Flowers of Sleepy Hollow Lake
Rough Cinquefoil (Potentilla norvegica)

(Cinquefoil, Rough - 01)  Rough cinquefoil are a summer blooming wild flower that can grow to a height of 3 feet.  They can be found growing in clearings, fields, along roadsides, or in thickets.

(Cinquefoil, Rough - 01a)  Based upon the name of this wildflower, we would expect the rough cinquefoil to have five leaflets on the leaves; however, as we can see in this photo, they have three leaflets on the leaves that grow alternately along the stem.  Flowers grow from the leaf axils, as one appears to be starting at the upper leaf axil in this photo.

(Cinquefoil, Rough - 01b)  The flowers of the rough cinquefoil measure 1/2 to 3/4 inch across.  Note also that the five green calyx lobes which are behind and between the five petals are also longer than the petals.

(Cinquefoil, Rough - 02)  In this photo we can see the five calyx lobes without the petals, which seem to fall off very quickly.

(Cinquefoil, Rough - 04)  This is another look at a newly opening rough cinquefoil flower.  The rough cinquefoil in a native wildflower that is a member of the Rose family (Rosaceae).

(Cinquefoil, Rough - 04a)  In this close up look at the rough cinquefoil, we can see that the flower is still cup shaped and that the leaves have not fully opened.

(Cinquefoil, Rough - 05)  This is another look at a newly opening rough cinquefoil. The rough cinquefoil blooms from late spring to early fall.

(Cinquefoil, Rough - 06)  This is another view of a rough cinquefoil flower.

(Cinquefoil, Rough - 06a)  In this bee's eye view of a rough cinquefoil flower, we can see most of the five green sepals and bracts, the five yellow and somewhat heart-shaped petals, and the numerous stamens and pistils.

(Cinquefoil, Rough - 07)  In this photo, we are looking downward upon the full length of the rough cinquefoil stem.

Presented here are just a few of the countless components of God's creation.  Just as we cannot have human and animal life without water and plants, neither can we have lasting peace without love and compassion.  It is our hope and prayer that this series will motivate people to live and act in a cruelty-free manner; that we would no longer hurt or destroy each other, the animals or our environment.
