The extracted alkaloid from the stems and leaves was used in many "quack" medicines because, to paraphrase one reference, "It set the insides on fire." In more modern times the alkaloid has found use in several anti-smoking products.

Just as we cannot have human and animal life without water and plants, neither can we have lasting peace without love and compassion.
