We say
“Take a walk in my shoes”
and see my world,
hear my thoughts,
feel what I feel.
But what if I don’t have shoes?
What if I have hooves
or claws
or paws
or fins?
Will you still walk in them?
Feel the ground the way I feel it
smell the air as I smell it
sense the breeze as I sense it?
Will you imagine
a life that is different from your own
but still life?
Or will you shy away
from empathy and love?
Shy away
from the pain of a cage
or a slaughterhouse?
Take a walk in my shoes
and you’ll feel a life
that deserves to be lived.
