AUTUMN OF THE YEAREarth is touched with gold
In the autumn of the year
Leaves crunch beneath your feet
And winter's drawing near...
The honking of departing geese
Warms and hurts my heart
I watch them in the autumn chill
Sad with them to part.....
The fields are bare and brown now
The trees are stark and bare
I smell pumpkin pies baking
And other things made with care...
The harvest is completed
The fireplace is ablaze
Take a walk in chilling twilight
Beneath a pale moonlight's haze...
A hearty stew is cooking slow
Sweet aroma of fresh bread
Knit hats, warm coats, mittens
And cozy blankets on the bed....
Happy Holidays are near now
Good memories, dear friends
Whispering voices...secrets
The Christmas cards you'll send...
Winter skies will bring the snow
Your sleeping cat on lap
Purring contentment lulls you
And you both take a nap....
Yes, autumn is a chilling time
But one I wouldn't miss
For under all its lifeless look
Is the promise of springtime's kiss....
