DEEP DECEMBER
Wide expanse of sky and field
Those crisp and amber days
Rows of brown stubbled corn
Beneath a pale moon's haze...
Forlorn call of Whip-O-Will
The sun is setting low
From hushed and darkened wood
Comes a sleek and gentle doe...
Sunshine fields of goldenrod
And brown soybeans afar
Scarecrows looking weather-beaten
'Neath the evening star..
Autumn's tints and textures
The firelight aglow
Frozen ponds and snow flakes
And winter winds that blow...
The huge orange harvest moon
I love to watch it rise
Lending silver to the wings
When geese skeins ribbon skies...
Warm sweaters, coats, and hats
The fresh hot cider drinks
Children play in colored leaves
'Neath skies of violets, pinks...
Apple pies and cookies bake
Aromas fill your head
While dad brings out the winter toy
The great big wooden sled....
Snow flakes fly in gray skies
But we look back and remember
Those lovely golden autumn days
When snug in deep December....
