ENDURANCE AS A WAY OF LIFE
Poetry by J. R. Hyland

I wake with dread, another day
To be endured, there is no way
That I can flee approaching dawn;
The day is here and must be borne.

But, oh my god, so hard to bear
The torment of remaining here;
Oppressed, crushed down by fear and doubt,
In agony my soul cries out --

Free me from this prison place!
You free me not, instead I face
Despair, with every morning’s light
That fires my eternal night.
