LIKE A HAWK
By M. Linda Steffey

My heart soars like a hawk
When I dream of past moons
Drifting through my mind
Like waves in blue lagoons...

My people were once proud
And lived with Nature's ways
Taking just to meet our needs
Those times were golden days...

Apache and Arapaho
Navaho and the Cree
And many more Nations filled this land
From sea to shining sea....

Each Nation had it's customs
It's language and it's place
Until from all directions
Came another race!

Our peoples are the colors
Of the earth throughout this land...
Those who live by seashore
And those in desert sand...

Forgot not my peoples
That your heritage is strong
Sing it to your children
In our many Indian songs...

I am an old and weary Chief
'Round me old women talk...
But when I dream of golden days
My heart soars like a hawk!...
