So Small
By John Cannon

Strong winds
rush in,

pushing the storms
off the coast,

bringing billows
of white clouds

racing across
a deep-blue sky.

Sturdy tree trunks
bend
with gale-force gusts

while small twigs
snap
throughout the woods.

High above me
the big birds
swoop and soar,

surfing the sky
with wild abandon
and such superb agility

that I stand
entranced,
staring at the sky.

There’s a sharp edge
of excitement
and vitality,

with just a tinge
of fear,

as Mother Nature’s
stiff broom
scours the earth

and she lets us know ―
once again ―

how very small

we are.
