THANKSGIVING DAY: 1973
by J. R. Hyland

I thank thee, Lord
For what I lack;
For what thy love
Has taken back,
And keeps for me
Until the Way
Is dark no more,
And night is day.

And I begin to acquiesce,
At last, in this
My ego--death;
And understand
That pain and fears
Measure only sensate years.

And I begin,
At last, to run
The race within
That was begun
So many years ago
When I
Was born into
This world, to die.
