Cardamom, ground

(Cardamom, ground)  Cardamom can also be spelled, Cardamon.  Cardamom is the fruit or seed of Elettaria cardamomum, a herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae), which can grow to heights of 12 feet. The seeds have a warm, slightly pungent, and highly aromatic odor and flavor. Originally cultivated in India, Cardamom was probably imported into Europe around A.D. 1214. Today, cardamom is cultivated in India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Guatemala, Mexico, Thailand and Central America.  Cardamom is used in a variety of cuisines today, primarily in and around the Indian subcontinent (curries) and in Scandinavia (Danish pastry).
