ACTION

This bill would allow certified U.S. sanctuaries to rescue primates from captivity overseas. The conditions we have found many of these animals in is truly disturbing and heartbreaking—isolated and crammed into small cages in dark basements, covered in their own feces. We want to help every needy captive primate we can, here and abroad. Right now, that opportunity is denied to us and other reputable U.S. primate sanctuaries.

INFORMATION / TALKING POINTS

A glaring oversight in America's federal legal code has prevented captive primates around the world from being rescued and receiving humane, lifetime care here in the U.S. Currently, U.S. law allows zoos, circuses, universities, and researchers to import primates for their often exploitative uses, but prevents bona fide sanctuaries from rescuing needy captive primates abroad.

Fortunately, Representatives Renee Ellmers (R-NC) and Peter DeFazio (D-OR), along with Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA), just introduced compassionate legislation that will give abused primates around the world a second chance at lives worth living!

We know first-hand how important this legislation would be. The Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary in Dilley, Texas is home to hundreds of primates, many of whom were rescued from deplorable circumstances in the United States. Sanctuary Director Tim Ajax tells us:

"The conditions we have found many of these animals in is truly disturbing and heartbreaking—isolated and crammed into small cages in dark basements, covered in their own feces. We want to help every needy captive primate we can, here and abroad. Right now, that opportunity is denied to us and other reputable U.S. primate sanctuaries."

Each individual animal matters, and we have the chance to help so many captive primates with this compassionate bill.

Thank you for everything you do for animals!
