It is illegal to slaughter horses in the U.S. However, thousands of U.S. horses are trucked to slaughterhouses in Mexico and Canada each year.
Last year’s massive federal spending bill defunded horse slaughter inspections by USDA meat inspectors. Since such inspections are required by federal law for slaughterhouses to operate in interstate commerce, the defunding put a temporary end to horse slaughter ONLy until September 30, 2016.
We now have an opportunity to permanently ban domestic horse slaughter with the “Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act.” The SAFE Act would permanently outlaw horse slaughter and prohibit the transport of horses across U.S. borders.
Tell your U.S. Representative to cosponsor HR 1942 by Representative Frank Guinta (R-NH), and ask both of your U.S. Senators to cosponsor S 1214 by Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ), the Safeguard American Food Exports (SAFE) Act.

There are only about 35 seconds of graphic footage in this seven minute presentation. If desired, this can easily be avoided by skipping 1:35 through 2:10.
