Physicians Committee
March 2017
The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) in Jackson, Miss., has announced that it has "Dropped the Hot Dog!" The medical center will be implementing a new menu on approximately April 1, and hot dogs will no longer be served to patients.
To help keep this momentum going and encourage other hospitals to go the extra mile to protect patient health, sign our petition: Should Children's Hospitals Protect Patients From Hazardous Hot Dogs?
In February, the Physicians Committee placed the following billboard near
the hospital and sent a letter urging UMMC's Batson Children's Hospital to
protect patients from hot dogs, which are linked to increased colorectal
cancer risk. We also highlighted that hot dogs are the No. 1 choking risk
for children.
When we followed up, a dietitian at the hospital told us they are removing
hot dogs from patient menus—not only at Batson Children's Hospital, but also
at the other three hospitals on UMMMC's campus!
So, a big thank you to you for helping to make this victory possible by speaking up through petitions, e-mails, and phone calls to key hospital administrators. This decision makes UMMC a leader in the movement to prevent diet-related diseases by removing hot dogs from its menu and encouraging other children's hospitals to do the same.
Thank you for everything you do for animals!
