The sanctuary has faced significant challenges, including the high cost and scarcity of animal food and medicine. Many Palestinians had to abandon their pets while fleeing the conflict, and some animals were left at the Egyptian border during evacuations. The sanctuary had to leave hundreds of dogs in a shelter with some food before evacuating south earlier this year.
In the heart of Gaza, amidst the chaos and struggles, a beacon of hope
shines through the tireless efforts of Sulala Rescue. This family-run animal
sanctuary has defied the odds, working around the clock to save hundreds of
animals suffering from the ravages of war. Despite facing severe shortages
of food and medicine, the dedicated volunteers of Sulala Rescue continue
their mission, driven by an unwavering commitment to compassion and care.
Sulala Rescue has managed to save hundreds of animals despite facing severe
shortages of food and medicine. This family-run animal sanctuary has been
working tirelessly to rescue animals in Gaza during a year of intense
Israeli bombardment.
Volunteer Sa’ed Al-Err has been caring for hundreds of animals, including
dogs, cats, horses, and donkeys, since Israel's invasion of the Gaza Strip
in October last year. Despite the lack of food and medicine, Mr. Al-Err and
other volunteers have continued their efforts through Christmas to help
vulnerable animals.
Mr. Al-Err mentioned that the need to help animals increased with the onset
of the war, which strengthened their resolve to continue their mission. They
receive numerous calls daily from people in Gaza seeking help for injured
animals, often found under the rubble of war or hurt in accidents.

The rescue organization has called on the Israeli government to allow animal
food and medicine into Gaza. Despite sending over 30 emails to the Israeli
Knesset, they have yet to receive a response.
The sanctuary was established in 2006 by Saeed El-Arr, who was motivated by
witnessing government officials encouraging the killing of stray animals. He
trained in Russia and registered Sulala in Gaza as an official charity to
shelter dogs, cats, and donkeys. The entire family is dedicated to caring
for animals, a principle instilled by Saeed El-Arr, and they are committed
to continuing their work despite the ongoing conflict.
The story of Sulala Rescue is a testament to the power of compassion and
resilience in the face of adversity. As the attack on Gaza continues, the
sanctuary's volunteers remain steadfast in their dedication to saving the
lives of countless animals. Their efforts highlight the importance of
empathy and the profound impact that a small group of determined individuals
can have, even in the most challenging circumstances. Through their
unwavering commitment, Sulala Rescue not only provides a lifeline for the
animals of Gaza but also serves as an inspiring example of humanity's
capacity for kindness and perseverance.
