Animals as Food
By Alan - 13 Aug 2012

Could you point me to an article or perhaps help me out with a biblical understanding about when and why God created carnivorous animals please?

I've been vegan now for several years and I've read a lot about the cruelty that people do to animals, but no one seems to address the cruelty that animals do to each other.

I've read passages in Genesis which show that both humans and animals were originally created to only eat plant based foods. I also read passages in Isaiah which state that the new kingdom will once again have animals eating a plant based diet. The lion will eat straw like an ox etc.

What happened to the animals after the fall to make them carnivorous and violent?

Did this happen as part of the curse in Genesis 3?

Did animals mutate/evolve into carnivores?

Are we saying that it is okay for animals to be cruel to each other, but not okay for us to do so?

The only explanation that I've heard so far is that only 5% of all the animal kingdom is carnivorous. That's the same statistic for the percentage of the population that is incarcerated and we certainly do not condone their behavior.

Thank you in advance for your help. I also want to thank you for your webpage. Some of the articles have really got me thinking. It's nice to know there are other christian vegans out there. I'm all alone in my beliefs. I don't even like going to any church functions anymore the food just grosses me out and makes me upset. It would be nice if I could discuss my views with other Christians, but there obviously is no such thing as a vegan denomination.
