Living in Joy in an often Joyless World

Comments by Bill Samuel - 28 Jan 2006

Jesus said, "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33, NIV) There is the world in which so much bad happens, and there is the Kingdom of God, which Jesus clearly taught is here and now, not just in the sweet bye and bye. In order to have joy, we must live in the victory that Jesus has had - live in the Kingdom of God in which He does reign now. I have confidence that Christ has indeed won the victory, and that His Kingdom is available to me now. This enables me to have joy even when so many bad things happen in the world. I know the REAL story, and it gives me joy.

The second key is thankfulness. No matter what tends to drag us down, there are always things to be thankful for. Once, when I was feeling very down, the old song, "Count your blessings" came into my head. It was difficult to count the first one, but once I got started I found there was no way I could count all my blessings. This is a good exercise for the dark times. And live every day being grateful for the small things. Don't take anything for granted. Thank God for everything, and thank those around you for everything they do for you - not just for the once in a while things but thank them every day for the things they do every day for you. This will bring joy both to you and to those around you. Have an attitude of gratitude.

Live in the blessings of God.
