A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Food Ads – 20 November 2006
By Mary T. Hoffman

Have you noticed how certain “food” commercials attempt to brainwash the public with ridiculous labeling of their products as being “manly”? And have you noticed how these “macho” products are, in reality, mostly derived from animals who suffer excruciating emotional and physical torture? These ads promote myths and fears about “getting enough protein” and “calcium.” The manufacturers of this junk food, that contains animal body parts and secretions, also know how to appeal to the fears of parents of young children.

On the other hand, a salad dressing – that, incidentally, also contains some animal-derived ingredients – commercial will show a girl dreamily picking at her salad.

Isn’t it interesting how even something like sexual insecurity can affect people’s choices – even of the food they eat? The irony of all this is that these much-advertised products tend to undermine the health and most likely have the opposite effect of that which is sought.

I wonder if all this emphasis on “macho food” consumption contributes to all the “erectile dysfunction” (ED) that must be fueling the sale of all the pharmaceuticals for this problem.
