Conflicts of Interest – 21 February 2007

An excellent article titled “Conflicts of Interest: The Hidden Side of Science” is in the January 2007 issue of the Health Letter, published by the Public Citizen’s Health Research Group.

According to this article, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), institutional review boards (IRBs), and major medical journals still fail to protect the public as they should, even after the press in 2003 revealed “…that some ranking NIH officials were getting tens of thousands of dollars in honoraria from industry….”

I’ve also noticed how “scientific breakthroughs” against diseases are regularly disseminated to the public as “news” by industries with a financial interest. And what about the huge number of pharmaceutical ads everywhere you turn? Truly, disease is big business.
