A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from All-Creatures.org

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Washington’s Birthday – 22 February 2007
By Mary T. Hoffman

According to the Julian calendar, George Washington was born on 11 February 1732, twenty years before the introduction of the Gregorian Calendar (named after Pope Gregory XIII) in 1752, which moved the calendar ahead 11 days, making the 11th of February the 22nd of February. The change from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar was intended to more accurately reflect a solar year.

George Washington’s Birthday –
February 22, 1732
By Mary T. Hoffman

George Washington was born on this day,
And there are many who say
He was a good and honest youth
Who readily confessed the truth:
“I cannot tell a lie,” said he.
“I’ve cut down the cherry tree.”
This legend is one that I was told
When I was in school and not very old.
I hope today’s children are taught to see
That honesty’s still the best policy.
