A Mary T. Hoffman Commentary from

"Joyful Curmudgeon" An oxymoron?
No! I see all the beauty of God's creation and I'm joyful.  At the same time, I see all the suffering and corruption going on in the world, and feel called to help expose and end it so that we may have true peace and compassion.

Beef Recall (continued) – 19 February 2008
By Mary T. Hoffman

Can you imagine how much abuse, lying, and corruption the powerful animal agriculture industries have been getting away with – and all the while with the blessing of our government? Until someone has the guts to reveal what’s going on, as happened in the latest recall, it’s business as usual.

The public should thank animal rights people for their efforts to expose the cruelty inherent in the animal agriculture industries. Even if most people couldn’t care less where their “food” comes from, they and their children are vulnerable to infections from the animal products they eat. These diseases can be short term or can take many years to show up in a patient, causing dreaded prion diseases such as mad cow or CJD (Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease), for example.

Another thought to keep in mind is the possibility that there may be other pathogens that have not been discovered yet. After all, most people had never heard of prions, the cause of mad cow disease and CJD, until fairly recently. Unfortunately, many people still haven’t heard! And they probably don’t give a second thought about the safety of their “food,” probably trusting that somehow the government or some “powers that be” are protecting them.

Meanwhile the corruption goes on.
