At the Feeders
By John Cannon

Something there is
about a nuthatch —

   the sleek look,
   the busyness,
   the constant chatter,

   maybe it’s
   the intensity
   in everything
   she does —

whatever it is,
it always,
rain or shine,

brings
a quick smile
to my face.
__________

And here’s
the bluejay,

handsome in his
blue and white
tuxedo,

he’s a devilish rogue
who bullies, screams
and screeches,

but he sure is
a pretty boy

and,

every now and then
when nobody else
is looking,

he calls
to his mate

with a surprising
soft, sweet,
love song.
